DEMOLITION:
ESSENTIAL YET DANGEROUS

Demolition and construction could easily be considered brothers in a literary sense. This statement is true because they both depend on each other greatly. Without the presence of effective demolition, projects being constructed could be inflated cost wise, as well as schedule wise. Keep the following points in mind before commencing any sort of demolition process:

  • Only competent individuals should be assigned to demolition work by their employer
  • Demolition of a building should occur from the top floor down
  • Certification from an engineer is required when demolishing a building with an adjoining structure. An engineer also must be present when tensioned steel cables or bars require demolishment
  • Provisions of a fully enclosed garbage chute is critical to the safety of the workers at the top of the chute, as well as below it
  • Accumulation of materials and debris within a building being demolished not only creates a serious hazard for workers on site, it also extends an invitation to a villain referred to as structural overload
  • A free-standing scaffold should be used in the demolition of a building from the inside
  • Extreme care should be implemented when using powered mobile equipment in the demolition process

* To learn more about the exhilarating process known as demolition, refer to part 30 of the guide to Alberta's Occupational Health & Safety Act, Regulation & Code.
