CLEANING SOLVENTS & CONSTRUCTION:A POTENTIALLY LETHAL UNION

Without the presence of cleaning solvents in the construction industry, a building would never truly be clean once the time came to turn it over to the applicable owner. Water by itself is no match for the dirt, grime, and bacteria that flourish within the atmosphere of a construction site. Solvents engineered for cleaning are a force to be reckoned with when handled by competent users who are fully aware of all consequences surrounding the mis-use, and mis-care of these effective yet perilous solutions. Use the following points as a tool of guidance when dealing with cleaning solvents on a construction site:

  • Non-flammable solvents should be used for general cleaning
  • When flammable solvents are the only answer to a grimy problem, ensure that hot-work is not permitted within the area
  • Store flammables & solvents in specialized storage areas
  • Refer to the applicable MSDS sheets before implementing solvents into your cleaning operation
  • Adequate ventilation must be provided when using solvents & flammables
  • Safety goggles/face-shields, respiratory protection, and hand protection are the P.P.E. tools of choice when cleaning with solvents
  • Appropriate containers must be used for the transportation and storage of solvents and flammables
  • When dealing with controlled products, users must be trained and certified within the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. Ensure that all WHMIS requirements are fully met

As you can see, there is much more to using cleaning solvents than initially meets the eye. Incompetent users are not only risking their own lives, they are risking the health & welfare of any individual un-lucky enough to be working within the same vicinity. Respect yourself and respect your fellow co-workers by respecting the most dependable solution within the construction industry; cleaning solvents.
